  1. These other answers given do not give you the full details.  Some train stations do NOT have ticket machines or someone always on duty selling tickets.  IF and ONLY IF there are no functional ticket machines at the train station, then you can purchase the tickets on board the train without paying a surcharge.  I KNOW Roselle Park train station only sells tickets in the morning until 10AM.  After that, you have no choice but to purchase them on board.  However, IF the train station definitely has ticket machines/agents available (which most do), then you need to purchase your ticket BEFORE boarding to avoid a $5 surcharge, even if it means missing your train and having to wait for the next one.  I know, NJ transit sucks and they are greedy!!

  2. You can buy from any NJ Transit ticket vending machine or ticket window.

Purchasing ticket from conductors add you $5 surcharge.

You can use monthly/weekly rail ticket on NJ buses, lightrails depends on zones printed on pass.

  3. You can buy at the station from an automated stand or on board.  I haven't bought on board in a while but it used to cost a little more that way.

Some stations still have a guy in a booth who can sell tickets as well.  And if you want a monthly pass you can buy it online.

At the below website you can find people authorized to sell NJ Transit tickets.

http://www.njtransit.com/ go Tickets and then Commissioned Ticket Agents on the sub menu that comes up.
