Question:

NL Hold'em Question?

I am playing at a casino this weekend that spreads two similar games. A NL$100 Max game with $1/$2 blinds, and a NL$200 Max game with $1/$2 blinds. If I were to play the NL$100 game what sort of adjustments should I make to my full ring game to be successful? Should I play tighter and more aggressive, or should I play looser and more aggressive. Some examples would make the understanding easier. Thanks for any help.

  1. The $200 buyin table will result in some deeper stacks and promote aggression...a lot depends on the table dynamics and ability level of your opponents. Get a feel for the game and adjust accordingly.

  2. you need to draw less, because the relative stacks are only 50 big blinds, you will not usually be gettting implied odds on most draws.

Also, be careful with bet size because a preflop raise, a continuation bet, and a turn bet will often commit you to call an all-in on the river, which you wouldnt want to do with just top pair

  3. In general, you'll suffer bigger swings in your bankroll with a higher max buy-in.

Being aggressiveness is almost always better than being passive.

Playing tight vs loose depends on what the other players are like.  In general, play tight in a loose game and looser in a tight game.

My guess is that the max 100 table will be looser.

  4. It really depends on who else is playing.

I always go in with a very tight/aggressive style; but, if I realize over time that the table is novice and very tight I will become looser because I know I can steal pots.

As far as the difference between $100 and $200, usually more experienced players will play at the $200, and there will be more raising.  I would suggest staying at the $100 table if you aren't sure about moving up.

    Where are you going?

  5. I agree with retro on his last point, but I think the main factor for holdem and most card games is position and cards, I am much more likely to play 10,q suited from the dealer spot or just behind, but if I am the first to act, I might toss them.  Me personally, I would play the $100 table.

    Good luck either way.

  6. You have to first get a feel for the people at the table to know how you want to play.  People who play NL have to be watchful of the other players and more aggressive play is usually successful depending on the table.  Don't let them catch you bluffing though.

  7. No Limit is a game of pot odds and implied odds.

The $200 max game has better implied odds which means you should draw more often than the $100.  Also, since your reverse implied odds are higher in the $200 game, you should bet and raise the pot more often when you have a hand to protect such as top pair (with a flush or straight draw on the board).
