NL Postseason Question?

here is a hypothetical NL Playoff scenario:

1) Central- Cubs

2) East- Mets

3) West- Dodgers

4) Wildcard- Brewers

the numbers indicate the seed. who would the Brewers play in the first round of the postseason if this is the way it works out? someone told me that the Brewers can't play the Cubs because they are in the same division, but i always thought that the lowest seed plays the highest seed in the conference regardless of what division they play in.

  1. The Mets would host the Brewers in the first round, and the Cubs would host the Dodgers.

The top seed plays the wildcard as long as the wildcard team is not in the same division. Since the Cubs and Brewers are both in the NL Central, the Mets would then host the Brewers and the Cubs will host the #3 seed (Dodgers).

If the Mets play the Brewers you will probably see Santana and Sabathia in Games 1 and 5. That'll be a tough series.

  2. The someone who told you is correct, the Mets would host the Brewers

Note to Ryan below... you're correct about the general NFL format, but the Giants didn't play the Cowboys until the second round... the Cowboys had a bye, the Giants beat Tampa first

  3. 1. They will play the Dodgers

  4. The wild card team plays the team with the best record, regardless of division. I like how you put the Dodgers winning the West lol

  5. Well here's My Theory, The Cubs Top Dogs would play The Diamondbacks winner of the West and The Brewers would play the Mets Winner of the East, I see the Dodgers falling further behind Arizona then they are now.

  6. The Mets would host the Brewers because the Cubs are in the same division as the Brewers. In MLB, the top seed always plays the wild card winner, unless they are in the same division.

NFL is where the top seed always plays the lower seed regardless of the division. (i.e. In the 2006-2007 NFL season the Eagles played the Giants in the first round of the playoffs even though they were in the same division)

  7. the lowest seed plays the highest seed (by number of wins) UNLESS they are in the same division. It's impossible to see a first round playoff matching with 2 teams from the same division. In this scenario, say the cubs won the most games, then the mets then the dodgers, then the brewers; the Cubs would play the Dodgers and the Mets would play the Brewers in the NLDS. GO METS!

  8. that's right the cubs and brewers would be a first round series

  9. Then it will be I am guessing the cubs will have the best record but they cant play the team thats in their division in the first round so it will be.... Cubs vs Dodgers

             Mets vs Brewers

  10. 1) Central- Cubs

    2) East- PHILLIES (have much better bullpen and ofense)

    3) West- D-BACKS (better pitching)

    4) Wildcard- Brewers

  11. In the first round, teams from the same division don't play against each other. So, if the season ended this way, the Cubs would host the D'Backs, and the Mets would host the Brewers.

Edit: Last year, the Rockies were the wild card, and the D'Backs were the #1 overall seed, but they didn't play in the Divisional Series because they're both NL West teams.

Edit: I didn't even notice that you had the Dodgers winning the West.

  12. Here's how it works. The Cubs get the Dodgers since they are in the same division as the Brewers. The Mets play the Brewers.
