NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament slated for May 2012 – Volleyball news
The NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Volleyball Tournament is scheduled to take place at Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California from May 7-12.
Teams from eight North American and Caribbean countries will come into stride to showcase their volleyball skills on the centre court. The drawing of lots has already been done and teams have been classified into two pools.
The Pool A is composed to teams from Cuba, Puerto Canada, Rico and the Dominican Republic, while the Native American team has been placed in Pool B along with Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica.
At the end of qualification tournament, only one team will earn the ticket to upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games, which are scheduled to begin in June. It is the first time that the qualification tournament for the NORCEC (North America, Central America
and the Caribbean) teams is being held in United States.
The USA Volleyball (USAV) is very much pleased to host the important Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Speaking of the opportunity the Chief Executive Officer of USAV Mr Doug Beal said, “USA Volleyball is extremely proud and excited to be hosting the 2012 NORCECA
Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament and we intend to put on a first-rate event, both for the competing teams and the fans who attend the matches.”
The US team will open tournament with pool play on May 7 at 8 p.m. In the first fixture, the hosts will go against Trinidad & Tobago. On next day, the home team will take on Costa Rica at 8 p.m. The pool play will be rounded off on May 9 with a match between
USA and Mexico. The teams with better win ratio and points will qualify for the quarterfinals, which will be played on May 10. According to the set formula of the competition, the second-place team in each pool will play the third-place team in the opposite
pool during the quarter final stage.
In the next run, the four successful teams will advance to the semi-finals, which will be played on May 11. Likewise, the rest of the teams will compete for the 5-8 positions. The final showdown of the 2012 NORCECA Qualification Tournament will take place
on May 12 and eventually the top team will capture the spotlight.
The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team is all up for victory in the competition. The U.S. team is currently ranked sixth in the world by the International Volleyball Federation and holds second position in NORCECA. They are also the defending Olympic Games
champion and this year it is going to be their seventh straight appearance at the Olympic Games, only if they make it to the top position.
The USAV has opened the sale of tournament tickets for fans on Monday, March 5 and sale will be on until March 15.
