  1. If you are a nose guard, you will line up over the center.  Your two options are beat him with speed, or beat him with strength.  Since you aren't going to be as big as him, you need to get him off balance so that his bigger size and strength aren't an advantage for him.  The way to do this is to stay low.  Keep your head up, and your center of gravity low.  When you come off the snap, take a couple of steps forward FIRST.  Don't come up first, but out first.  You will be hitting the center as he is coming up.  Get there as he is coming up, and help him go further up than he wants to.  Once you get to him, keep your hands close to your body, put them on his chest pads, and EXPLODE upwards.  Visualize this prior to the snap.  "Feel" your body to be cemented to the ground until you explode up.  If you visualize your center of gravity to be low to the ground, your body will follow.  When you hit the center, his body is naturally coming up, you will be hitting him upward, and he will go upward.  It is fairly easy to lift a 300lb lineman off the ground using this technique.  Once you get him off balance, and going up, you can just toss him to the side.  His technique will be to go as low as possible too, but you just need to get lower.  Visualize all the strength in your body going to your quads and hamstrings prior to the snap.

I know it sounds kinda stupid, but if you visualize yourself blowing this guy up, it will happen.  It will also get you noticed.  A 300lb center going straight up is not a common site on an offensive line.

Use your speed advantage, and technique to beat a guy that is bigger and stronger than you are.

The best way to teach yourself to stay low is to build a tunnel of some sort that is just two or three feet long, and just a few inches taller than you are in your stance.  Stand on the outside of it in your stance, simulate the snap, and go through the tunnel.  Once on the other side, you explode up.  It might help to hang a 100lb bad of sand on the other side so you have something to "hit" as you come up.

  2. Nose Guards are pit dogs and there are two Defensive methodologies:

    Gap Control or Penetration Defense.

I don't know which one YOUR coach runs with...but your job varies.

Gap control you fight to the butt of the Offensive Linemen.

Penetration you fight through the line.

    Tools to learn are:

    RIP

    SWIM

    SLAP & SWIM

    PUSH/PULL

If you can't keep from standing up when you fire off the line, then use a 4 point stance. Drive low and fight up.

PS: "coach" Bill - NOT all nose guards play over the center...

Kentucky's "Boise" 4 - 3 Defense identifies their NG over the weak side guard.

  3. First you shoot your hands, your first move should be getting one hand on his collar and the other grabbing his shoulder, that way you can rip, wrongarm, push, etc. But mainly you should focus more on maintaing and clogging the gap unless it's a pass.

Or you could use the cup-check

  4. fake one way, rip or swim the other.  go one way, spin the other.  slap his hands away when he goes for the punch and rip through.  and of course the greatest move of all time, listen close.  at the snap take a few steps AGGRESIVELY at a 45 degree angle to make the Olineman move his feet, while he shuffles over to stay in front of you, stay low and turn into him with everything you've got.  he'll be off-balance and you can drive his *** back.  then use the rip or whatever when u get the QB in your sights.  trust me, it works.
