Question:

NRI Seats in India?

How do NRI seats actually work? I want to go to India and claim an NRI seat at an institution that only has 7 NRI seats in total. I will admit that I did not have the best high school gpa, it went from a 4.1 to a 2.8 by the time I got my diploma. However to go against that I got about 2230 on my SAT I, so to say I'm not a complete r****d.

Merit wise you can see that I am ill-prepared, so I am curious as how to get a seat at an institution that offers NRI seats. Is it true that you can get in with a donation? I don't mind taking an entrance exam, but I read those are only for those in the general India category. Money is certainly not an issue, my parents wouldn't mind paying a crore or 2 for my whole college education. So if I were to try to get into one of these colleges, how should I go about doing so?

  1. Pls contact the university or the institute directly for details. Many institutes also consider your academic record and SAT score during the evaluation process. also you did not mention which course of study you are intend on doing?

Fees for NRI quota seats are usually higher than what it is for local Indians. Simlar to the non-local fess structure in many US universities.

One mor ething, taking the entrance in India will also make you eligible for the non-local quota, and you can try to avoid this NRI quota. Usually entrances in India are subject specific and not a universal test like SAT.

  2. It depends on the college/course you select.

NRI seats go on first come first serve basis. You need to contact the institute you wish to join to see whether they got some seats left out.
