Question:

NRL salary cap explained?

Is the salary cap relating to each player? (Eg. Is each player allowed to get the maximum of the cap)

Or is the salary cap relating to the whole club?

Does it relate to each year or multiple seasons?

Is there restrictions on the amount of outside sponsership allowed to players?

  2. Brilliant answer carefree. I love league and the salary cap is ruining it.

  3. There's no cap on how much a single player can earn, but there is a cap on the collective salary of all the players in the team.

They take the top 25 payed players in the squad and they have to fit them in the $4.1M cap. The cap is raised every year depending on revenue but it has been rising pretty fast lately (was $3.7M last year, will probably be $4.5M+ next season). They also have a salary floor which is the minimum a club can spend on players which is $3.75M this year - in other words, they cant spend any lower than that amount. A player for example Israel Folau who signed a $2.2M - 4 year contract with the Broncos will receive that $2.2M over the 4 year period($550,000 a season)

Yes there is a restriction on sponsorship deals for players. The NRL is tied down to certain sponsors for the comp so when a player wants to get sponsored by Nike for $1M a season or whatever, the NRL introduced the rule that if the player has access to that $1M then it must be added to the cap. The NRL did this so they dont have any conflicts with the existing sponsors for the NRL...pretty stupid really.

Hope that helped because it took me ages to type lol...

  4. The top fellow is correct regarding the salary cap but when it comes to sponsorship hes a little off.

A player can earn as much as they can out of sponsorship!

The only restriction is that if the sponsor is a club sponsor the money is added to the salary cap, but if the player can find a sponsor who does not sponsor his club he can earn as much as he can without that affecting the clubs salary cap.

EG. The Roosters are sponsored by City Ford, so any sponsorship to a Roosters player from City Ford will be added to the salary cap.

But if say Microsoft for example wanted to sponsor the player he could earn as much as they are willing to pay him without it being added to the salary cap.

  5. yes that is explained very well and i dont think i can add anything to it
