Im applying for this scholarship currently..I have a 3.7 GPA with 1240 SATS (old test). I just scored a 270 of the PFT and i have some extra curriculars. Do I have a shot? My recruiter told me I probably won't get it so i should just enlist but i know recruiters sometimes are like that. Also, is the NROTC a good option? Because i think i would be a better officer if i went to bootcamp and did active duty before i can lead Marines.

  1. If you don't get a scholorship you can do the college program.

  2. Wait and see if you are accepted before signing anything.  You seem like you're a prime candidate for the program, I don't know why the recruiter would discourage you (well, I do know...he probably wants you to enlist to fill a quota).  A recruiters job is obviously to recruit people, but they should also educate and ENCOURAGE you, and steer you to the path that's right for you.  You should probably ask to speak to a different recruiter.  As for the other part of your question, an NROTC scholarship is a great option, and this is the best/only time in your life to take advantage of it (i.e. you need to be very young, and single).  You are right, though: prior-enlisted Marines usually make good officers, and there are several options for you to become an officer after you are enlisted.  I would say do your research, wait to see if you're accepted, then make the decision that's best for you.  Feel free to e-mail me.  I'm an active duty Marine, currently attending college as part of a commissioning program, so I actually know what I'm talking about.
