NSW edge past Queensland by 2-1 in Day Three Game of Women’s U-21 National Hockey Championship
After showing super performance, the women’s hockey team of New South Wales (NSW) won their Day-Three match of the (Women) U-21 Australian National Championship by 2-1 against Queensland that took place at the National Hockey Centre in Lyneham on July 14,
2011.
The match between NSW and Queensland was a splendid show where both the teams demonstrated marvellous performances. Though the women from Queensland showed a competitive game in the opening quarter of the match, but they could not continue their stiffened
defence throughout the seventy minutes of play.
Though the game was quite low scoring, but the start of the fixture was fast and furious. The beginning of the game was filled with lot of attacks and counter-attacks. Owing to initial penetrations, the NSW's side earned a short-corner in the very second
minute of the match. Georgina Madden was the player who stamped the authority of NSW through a classic penalty conversion and opened the scoring at 1-0.
However, the women from Queensland were also flying high and replied with a counter-offence in the very second minute. In the 4th minute of the first half, Ashlea Fey scored off a short-corner and had it all even at one-all.
It was the overall action from Queensland and NSW in the first thirty-five minutes of the fixture. Both the squads failed to make an addition in the next 30 minutes despite loads of strikes from each team.
Both the women teams of Queensland and NSW commenced the second period in a guarded way. In the 54th minute of the match, Kristen Pearce of NSW scored a goal from the field and took lead in the game. The defending girls from NSW did not allow
the opponent attackers to score a goal and became victorious after the time-completion.
Amazingly the second match of the day between Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Tasmania was concluded at 2-2 draw. It was another important competition where both the teams required a victory or a draw to remain at the top four positions.
Tasmania and ACT though downed on the field in quite a cogent way. However, it was the latter one which established its early dominance. The Tasmanians carried out a large number of attacks in the opening minutes and opened the scoring in the 12th
minute of the match, when Bridie Hopkins scored a goal from the field.
However, it was countered by a field goal from Jordan Beard of ACT in the 15th minute of the match. Another ACT girl, namely Rebecca Lee, added a goal in the 22nd minute which put them ahead onto the scoreboard.
After a prolonged end-to-end play, Monique Grundy tied the knots in the 54th minute which continued until the final whistle. The match concluded at two-each and both the squads remained among the top four places.
