NSW to face WA in Grand Finale of U-21 Australian National Men’s Hockey Championship
The men’s hockey teams of New South Wales (NSW) and Western Australia (WA) qualified for title-claiming match of the U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship, which is scheduled to be held on July 16, 2011 at the Perth Hockey Stadium.
WA edged past Queensland by a single goal, 5-3, while NSW thrashed South Australia (SA) by eight goals, 9-1.
In the first match, Western team of Australia opened the game on a very high note and rendered one of their best performances in the championship. WA and Queensland started the game at fast pace, but it was the former one which marked the first goal of the
day in the very early minutes. Daniel Sampey showed brilliant passing and created a chance for Aran Zalewski who did not miss it and scored the first goal in the 8th minute. The action continued in the next few minutes and Daniel Sampey doubled
the tally in the 19th minute. He unleashed a brilliant hit that moved comfortably into the Queensland's goal.
The Queensland made a penetration in the 20th minute, when Peter Dillon after getting a pass from the right flank tapped it into the goal-post. In the later time, his team-mates, Matt Gohdes and Kane Posselt, notched a couple of goals in the 22nd
and 30th minutes and took the game into the their favour.
Sampey came into the action once again, compleyted his hat-trick by scoring a couple of goals in the 32nd and 33rd minute, and earned a single goal lead, 4-3.
With three minute into the second half, Sampey took the ball into the defensive circle of Queensland and struck a flick into the net. In the second half, the WA showed outstanding defence and only conceded a single goal in the 55th minute, when
Jacob Webber chipped in a shot to the goal. Western Australia won the game by 5-4.
In the second fixture, NSW overpowered South Australia by eight goals and moved into the finals of the Championship. NSW was at their best from the very early minutes of the match and ruined the defensive-line of Southern squad.
The NSW scored five goals against the solitary of SA in the first thirty-five minutes of the final league match.
Joshua Walters opened the scoring through a field goal in the 5th minute and put NSW ahead on the score-board. He scored the second goal in the 37th minute of the match. Apart from him, Matt Willis and Matthew Dawson scored one goal
each in respectively, in the 12th and 32nd minute of the game. Jordon Willot made an addition with a couple of goals in the 26th and 37th minutes, respectively and played his part in the win. Oliver Walker, Luke
Noblett and Tristan White added one goal each, respectively in the 35th, 50th and 54th minutes.
The solitary goal from South Australia was scored by Harrison Gill from the field in the 30th minute of the match. The NSW won the crucial game and will play now the Grand Finale against WA on July 16.
