NSW whitewash NT by 5-0 in U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship
Emily Smith marked a couple of goals and had an assist, as the women’s hockey team of New South Wales (NSW) notched a commanding 5-0 victory over Northern Territory (NT) in the U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship, held at the National Hockey Centre
in Lyneham, Canberra on July 21.
On marking a convincing victory in the final game, the NSW women succeeded to retain the top position at the point-chart after the group matches. They have played seven games with six win and one loss in the hands of Western Australia.
On the other hand, Northern Territory had one victory, five losses and one draw. It is holding second last position at the bottom line with only four points on the point-chart.
Though the NSW women were in shocked state-of-mind after losing their first game against low-profile Western Australia, they commenced the match in their natural aggressive style. They started hurling fires at the NT's goal in the very early moments and
established their dominance with the ball under possession.
With 30 seconds into the match, Emily Smith, the skipper of the NSW side, opened the goal-scoring campaign and put her side in front on the score-board. She took the ball in front of the goal-keeper and volleyed a powerful shot at the corner of the goal.
After conceding the solitary goal, the defending girls from NT made their defence more tight and did not allow the opposite players for more incursions in the latter time of the first half. Regardless of the fast and furious game from NSW, they failed to
increase the tally in the first half and moved into the second half at 1-0.
The NSW women resumed action in the second period and approached the defensive-circle of NT back-to-back. It was the style of play from them which paid them off and they won four out of five games. With seven minutes into the second play, the skipper once
again took the ball under her stick and slammed the ball into the backboard to increase the score, 2-0.
Following the two goals, all the action belonged to NSW, which did not allow the NT's strikers to test their defence. In the 56th minute of the game, Emma Clifton scored a goal from the field and increased the tally up to three.
In the results of their fast and furious style of play, Cara Simpson accounted for a goal from the field and put NT under heavy pressure. With four minutes into the match, Mathilda Carmichael converted a short corner and sealed the one-sided victory at 5-0.
