I'm trying to convert some of my old NTSC videotapes to PAL either on DVD or videotape.

Problem is the picture either rolls or is a funny colour when I'm done and unwatchable.

Any tips?

  1. Not quite sure where you are and what equipment you are using.

NTSC VHS need to be played back on an NTSC or multi system VHS, if you are in Europe. Often PAL Tv's will play them back without rolling as the frame rate is not far different on both system. In addition, PAL TV's can sometimes be switched to produce correct colour pictures from NTSC if you can switch them to "PAL 3,58" as an option.

In the USA, multisystem and PAL compatible equipment is far from common, but, of course, you will be able to play back the tapes in the NTSC format without a problem. Are you trying to do the conversion in Europe or USA?

Professional conversion between PAL and NTSC is rather more complicated than finding NTSC/PAL compatible playback equipment. I suggest the latter as it is much cheaper and does not cause such a  loss of quality as conversion. Remember, however, the NTSC tapes are never going to look as good as the higher definition PAL pictures.
