  1. Let x be no. of volunteers and y be no. of trees.

    so in case 1

                          3x+9=y

    n in case 2

                          5x+3=y

    Solving both equations we get,

    x=3    (no. of volunteers)

    y=18  ( no. of trees)

  2. Number of volunteers = x

    Number of trees to be planted = y

    If 3 trees are planted by each then 9 trees are left. This  gives the following equation

    3x + 9 = y

    If  5 trees are planted by each then 3 trees are left. This  gives the following equation

    5x+3 = y

    i.e. 3x + 9 = 5x +3

    i.e. x =3 and y= 18

    Number of volunteers = x =3

    Number of trees to be planted = y =18
