Question:

NY Boat License?

I am 17 years old and have my full drivers license and live in NY I want to use my dads boat but I am confused because the rules say that you need a boaters safety certificate if you are under 18 driving a PWC (is a recreational watercraft that the rider sits or stands on) but does that include a boat. Do I have to take the safety boat course or is my drivers license good?

  1. Your license to drive an automobile is not applicable to piloting a boat, other than for identification. Review the state requirements at the link below.

  2. You should ask your local DMV, or whoever gives the boater's safety course.  They are the final authority, not someone with a modem and a few minutes to spare.  If you trust someone from here and you're wrong, you could get an expensive ticket.  If you go to the actual authority, you'll get the straight dope, and maybe even the closest place that offers the safe boating class.

  3. Out of the NYS Boaters Guide:

In order to operate a boat without adult supervision you must be at least 18 OR have successfully completed an approved safe boating course and be between the ages of 10 and 18. If you have not taken and passed the safe boating course and are under 18 you must be under the direct supervision of someone 18 or older. You must also carry the certificate (its not a license) with you at all time while operating the boat.
