NY Mets’ Sandy Alderson astonished by Werth – Nationals deal
Major League Baseball is heading towards the free agency and as teams look to clinch the best flock of stars from the market, a challenging event is coming up. The winter meetings, scheduled for today will commence and it is expected to mould in a cluster
of players to respectable large deals. Ball clubs know the reality of such an event. 30 franchises from the National League and the American League combined, will gather together in a hotel to interact with various free players in the market.
The off season period is going to come to an end soon and this fact along makes the winter meetings that much critical to the cause bringing on great players to the squad. For weaker teams, this tenure is less than an opportunity as their offers can be curtailed
by bigger ones offered by major teams in the three regions of Major League Baseball.
One of the lowly ranked teams however has made the move for the right player in the league. Jayson Werth who recently moved to the free agency after the Philadelphia Phillies failed to sign him on an extension, moved to the Washington Nationals on a 7-year
deal worth $126 million. The deal has angered one General Manager in particular and he’s remarked on the development with: "It makes some of our contracts look pretty good. I thought they were trying to reduce the deficit in Washington."
The new GM of the New York Mets, Sandy Alderson, is stripped with finances and he believes the club will not make it out of the situation in the coming campaign when the race to the playoffs will resurrect for a new tenure in 2011.
Alderson said, "I don't think you should expect us to come back with the high-profile trophy. I think I've been pretty consistent about that."
Sandy believes the deal breaks the parameter of a cost effective stride towards a safe signing in the off season. The valuations on various players are expected to rise in the winter meetings and it’s reasonable to think the Mets will have less power over
their negotiations in the coming days.
Sandy recently said, "In some ways, this is the worst possible time to be looking at free agents. The beginning of the Winter Meetings is always a little frenetic. While we want to be actively involved, we want to also be a little cautious."
