NY Mets pitcher Francisco Rodriguez charged with assault
New York police have said New York Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez has been charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanour, following an incident with his father-in-law.
Rodriguez was arrested at Citi Field, the Mets’ home stadium, where the altercation took place. His father-in-law was taken to hospital with apparent facial injuries and a bump on the head. Rodriguez was immediately charged by police as the offence falls under New York State’s domestic violence policy, which charges offenders regardless of whether the victim chooses to press charges.
According to reports K-Rod will be taken to a courthouse in the morning.
"There was an incident at the ballpark between Francisco Rodriguez and his family. He was questioned by police and all other questions pertaining to this matter can be addressed to police," Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said.
When questioned about the incident Rodriguez was clearly upset, yelling: "Mind your own [expletive] business!" The relief pitcher then stormed into a restricted area of the clubhouse where he was followed by a club security member and a uniformed police officer.
The 28-year old has had a history of incidents during his time with the Mets. Earlier in the year he was involved in a heated argument with bullpen coach Randy Niemann and in July 2009, Rodriguez also entered a heated exchange with former Mets official Tony Bernazard - Bernazard was later fired by the Mets.
And in June 2009 K-Rod and New York Yankees relief pitcher Brian Bruney had to be separated before a game, after the two got in each other’s faces.
