  1. Somewhere between $100 and $150. New York is expensive. I've dined in restaurants in New York like Le Cote Basque, Chanterelle, Bouley, etc where dinner for two cost (with out tip, and only a glass of wine each - not a bottle) $250 -$500.

  2. Although it is possible to spend obscene amounts of money for a good meal in New York City, there are some wonderful deals to be had as well and we're not just talking Manhattan.  Because so many business people have opted to move to more spacious homes in the outer boroughs, fine dining has followed them to neighbourhoods like Park Slope & Williamsburg, Brooklyn; Astoria, Queens and beyond.

From personal experience (I went studied there) if you like French food which is traditionally very expensive just about anywhere, try the restaurant at the French Culinary Institute...L'ecole.  There you can have an amazing meal (3 course Lunch $26.50, or 4 or 5 course dinner (depending on the day you go, for $39.95) quite possibly the next Bobby Flay, Marcus Samuelson, Jacques Pepin or Andre Soltner...all of whom either went or teach there.

And then there are countless other gems all over the boros to get a fabulous meal inexpensively and even cheap. (See the New York Magazine link below...it's the most recent top rated cheap eats guide with brief but detailed reviews).

It seems you're coming to New York in June.  There should be another restaurant week celebration in June and during this time you can go to some of the city's Celebrity Chef owned restaurants and have a 3 course lunch or dinner for under 30 and 40 dollars respectively. (These places normally charge the super expensive prices New York is famous for). Del Posto (Mario Batali and Lidia Bastianich) was amongst them last year, one or two of Daniel Bouloud's places was as well, Marcus Samuelson, David Burke, Anthony Bourdain....

There is no information yet on the web about it, but if you do a search now and then later on this month there will probably be information posted.

And finally, don't think that you have to go to a fancy place to have a good meal..there are countless wonderful places all over the 5 boros that never make the Zagat or Michelin guides...A good rule of thumb is, eat the cuisine that belongs to the locals...if you're in Astoria...go Greek; Jackson Heights in  Queens, Indian or South American; Williamsburg in Brooklyn, Polish or German.

  3. I would figure about $110 for a meal for two that included an entree (about $20 per person), soup or salad (about $10 per person), and a dessert (about $10 per person), with a non-alcoholic drink (about $3 per person), plus taxes and tips.  For wine or other alcoholic drinks, the price would go well over $100.  Sure, you can eat a lot cheaper, but in a nice restaurant, that would be the approximate price...

  4. whatever we pay in pounds, they pay in dollars.

So I would say 50 dollars would get you a nice meal for two. Depends on the place of course.

Even in  a real swanky joint ( as I believe they call them) you would be hard pressed to spend more than 90 dollars for two ( excluding drinks and tips)

  5. Between 100-150 per person - it all depends on where you go though - there are some amazing places that do prix-fixe options - wine will also cost you, so be prepared to bring a few hundred bucks!

PS. For a fabulous prix-fixe dinner, go to Per Se or Daniel - they're both amazing!
