We are visiting NYC and I wanted to know is it worth spending 60 bucks on buying the tour Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty or can we just catch a cab from our hotel which is Flatotel. Also anyone know if that hotel is cool, nice, and kinda modern & hip. I wanted to be in the middle of everything.

  1. Its a decent hotel.  Good value for the city..

The location in the 50s puts its a good spot. You are close to time sqaure, central park, grand central and many other key areas.

  2. We visited Ellis Island, and if you are at all into history , it is just awesome! Allow plenty of time by going early in the day, so that you have enough time left for a good visit to the Statue of Liberty. It is absolutely worth the time and money to go see! Have a good trip!

  3. I dont know that hotel, but id say take the cab and do it yourself.

try to get there early, beat the tour buses. You'll take a ferry to both places- you can probably be done visiting both before lunch.

there is a museum right across the street from battery park that you can check out (its a wing of the smithsonian) - from there you can walk right down the street and see the wall street bull, and keep tracking to the empire state building- just a few blocks further.

  4. My friend, if you don't want to spend $60, may I suggest taking the Staten Island Ferry. Its free and it passes the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on its way to and from Staten Island.

In regard to taking a cab, my advice, if you don't want to get stuck in Midtown traffic take the subway instead. Since you hotel on West 52nd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, you can take the downtown (southbound) #1 subway line (Red Line Local) from 50th Street and Broadway to South Ferry.

You can also, walk south along 7th Avenue, from 52nd to 49th Streets and take the downtown (southbound) "R" or "W" subway lines (Yellow Line Local) from 49th Street to Whitehall Street - South Ferry. There is an entrance to the 49th Street subway station at 50th Street and 7th Avenue.

The fare on the subway is $2 one way, per person. If you visiting NYC for a week or two, you can purchase a 7-day or 14-day unlimited ride MetroCard, which will give unlimited rides anywhere in the city on the subway and bus system.

The 7-day unlimited ride MetroCard cost $25 a person and the 14-day unlimited ride MetroCard cost $47 a person.

I hope this information is very helpful.

  5. The Flatotel is in midtown Manhattan, which is a costly ride to the Statue.

If you have a small group, you may be better off taking the subway (1 train to the South Ferry station, 4 or 5 train to the Bowling Green station or R/W train to the Whitehall Street station.)

  6. You can't take a cab to Ellis Island because it is, well, an island, but you can take the subway to the beginning of the ferry to Ellis island. The tour buses are a waste of money. save plenty of time for the Statue of Liberty because there is lots to see.

  7. Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are on their own respected separate islands. You cannot "take a cab" to them. You need to get there by ferry. Tickets are $12.

Skip the cab and grab the 1 train at 50th and Broadway and take it to the last stop (South Ferry).
