NYC Teachers?

Question

I was wondering what its like to be a teacher in NYC. What is the salary after taxes? Would you recommend teaching there? Or what job would you recommend for the city? Currently, Im working on my teaching degree over in N. Jersey (about 30mins from the city) and I work in a school and enjoy it. I was just wondering if its a good idea to teach in NYC. As far as living goes, I know about rents and all so its not really a question of affordability because I wouldnt be the only source of income, but I would like to know how other people manage on a teacher's salary too.

I would recommend finding out as much as you can about a school before working there.  There are some fab places to work in the system and some not so fab places.  Ask a lot of questions, get a tour of the building, check their report card online.

There are a ton of programs to help new teachers.  They have grants if you work in a title 1 school.  There is another program that will help you with your housing (give you money) and yet another that will give you a signing bonus.

the health and dental is nice, but the retirement is fantastic as we just passed a new law 25/55, so you can retire at age 55 or with 25 years of service (which ever is latter) with full retirement.

If you can get into a school in Manhattan, you would prob. be good as gold.  Some parts of Harlem and Queens are nice, forget about Staten Island, it's nearly impossible and Bronx and Brooklyn have some nice areas, but be careful, less you want a huge challenge and lots of stress.
