  1. Not a New Yorker, but I have traveled the USA quite a bit and I'll give you 9 other cities to see to get a taste of it all

Washington, DC- capital of the USA, could spend a week there easy

Chicago, Illinois- 3rd largest city in the USA, unique in its own ways

    Denver, Colorado- great mountain setting

Seattle, Washington- near some of the most beautiful scenery in North   America

Los Angeles, California- 2nd largest city in the USA, California scenery

    Miami, Florida- beach city

Austin, Texas- neat city that people overlook, best in Texas

Boston, Massachusetts- a lot of colonial American history

San Francisco, California- the bay area

  2. Boston, Washington, Chicago, L.A. San Francisco, Miami, Las Vegas, San Diego

  3. this question has stirred considerable debate in my household.

so after much discussion we have developed no less then four lists -top ten, bottom ten and highly recommended second choices.

my family’s top ten for anyone visiting the us for the first time in no particular order:

1 new york-we hate them for their cockiness, but they are the best.

2 las vegas-you have to. if nothing else for the bragging rights.

3 los angeles-I voted strongly against this, but was overruled by the wife, who says it is not really nice but is Hollywood. 'nuff said.

4 chicago-like new york but cleaner.

5 boston-an original US city, with MIT AND Harvard

6 denver-the mile high city in the mountains

    7 atlanta-queen of the south

    8 seattle-west coast gem

9 new orleans-the french connection(how can you not go?)

10 miami-florida, and disney land is a hop skip and jump away

    my  personal top ten:

1 new york-yeah they have the moxie. and they deserve it.

2 chicago-in my opinion, like new York but better.

3 san antiono-the best in the west

4 san francisco-my favorite in california

5 las vegas-how can you go to the US and not go to las vegas?

6 flagstaff arizona-this city is next to the petrified forest, which you may not have heard of and is the closest city to the grand canyon which you have to of heard of.

7 denver-well, I just liked it. and it just gets better and better over time.

8 new orleans-it is the most poignant city in the US at the moment

9 seattle-possibly my favorite city in the united states.

10 Miami-I enjoyed the heck out of this city-note: the wife voted against on the grounds that the pizza is bad. I overruled on the premise that you cannot hold bad pizza against one of the best, most diverse cities on the continent.

the worst list-and be warned when we say worst we mean it. these locales are bad enough to be radioactive, not just dangerous to the unwary-all cities have an element of danger, these are bad, bad karma.

    worst list:

1 new jersey esp. newark. in certain circumstances we are prepared to in general to make exceptions for the state of new jersey, but not newark. ever.

2 philidelphia-has some good points, lotsa history but in general is very hostile to the newcomer

3 nevada  with the exception of Reno, carson city las vegas, lake tahoe  and fallon. nevada is very, very barren. and that seems to drive the small populations outside the above listed areas psychotic.

4 alberque, new mexico-at one time in the 1990's it was the city's official policy to paint EVERYTHING pink-light poles, bridges, highways and all new residential construction. and when I say pink, I do not mean a good pink. except for that it reminded us of newark

5 branson/springfield/kansas city missouri-unless I guide you. these areas are not used to kindness. avoid if possible.

6 houston, texas-the home city of big oil;giant pre-historic insects, and enron.

7 el paso, texas-the worst of two countries concentrated in one spot. Plus the pizza is bad.

8 tacoma, washington-the dark side of seattle

9 colorado springs, Colorado- beautiful country, terrible people.

10 pine ridge, south dakota-it will break your heart. possibly literally.

places we wanted to include on the top ten but could not agree on-the minority report, you could say. Smaller (and not so smaller) cities that are highly recommended.

Carmel California-the wife says this is what heaven must be like

    Olympia, Washington-

    Carson city, Nevada-totally cool

St Petersburg, Florida-the oldest city in the US

    Butte, Montana-tops for outdoor activities

Pt Townsend, Washington-this is what I think heaven must be like

Chapel Hill or Charleston North and Couth Carolina respectively-these are perfect cities-temperate climate, beautiful people and the best barbecue in the world.

Oklahoma city, Oklahoma-well, we like it. very laid back.

Portland, Oregon-some would say this is the best of the west.

Stone Mountain Georgia-they have overcome apartheid to become the most understated city in the south.

sante fe/las cruces new mexico-new mexico at its finest. las vegas new mexico-not the other las vegas is also very accommodating.

Anchorage, Alaska or Honolulu Hawaii-odds are you may only get to chose one-if so chose Hawaii.

Lake Tahoe(on the border of nevada and california)-most resorts are over hyped. not this one.

    enjoy your trip.

  4. I would say:

    Washington DC

    Los Angeles

    Seattle

    Miami

    Dallas

    Chicago

    Minneapolis

    Boston

    New Orleans
