Question:

NYC recently paved my street...and might have broken my water main. Need Advice!?

The city did a lot of ripping up and steam rolling in repaving the street. Today I see water percolating through the surface of the street in front of my house. So it appears likely they broke my main running from the street main into my house. Do I own that pipe? Am I responsible? What should I do? Seems rather unfair that the city breaks my pipe and now I have to pay to replace it (?). Thanks for any advice/knowledge.

  1. You'll have to call '311' immediately.

That water is washing out the road-bed and needs to be dealt with.

You own your service line, but you can argue that they are responsible for the break and thus the fix.

    Lotsa luck.

  2. As far as I know a broken water main at the street is the city's responsibility. If you see water percolating ,call the city water services and let them know there is a problem. Is the water in your house running?

  3. Your responsibilty is from the water meter to your house.

If the leak is on the street side of the meter then it is the cities problem.

Turn all water off in your house and look at the meter and see if the dial is turning.

If it is, its your problem and you need to call a plumber.

If its not running then call the city and let them know
