Question:

NYPD Entry Exam and Academy?

I'm 14 and my dream is to be a Police Officer in NYC. I know the pay is horrible and the new classes are very short on recruits because of it. My Neighbor is an LT. and we were talking about being a cop. He said that the entry exam is so easy that an ill-literate monkey could pass it. He also said that the Academy is so easy that I am in better shape than half the guys in the Academy and I'm about 5'8 150 LBS. Wanted to know if any of this was true from guys who have recently joined the force.

He also told me that they need recruits so bad that they are even hiring some felons to fill up the classes. He was no joking either. Any truth to this either? Thanks

  1. I've heard from several cops that the NYPD has relaxed its recruiting standards.  And I've also heard it's true that people with misdemeanor convictions are sometimes hired.

However, according to NYPDrecruit.com, the felons thing isn't true.  See below:

Some factors that are cause for disqualifications:

Any Conviction of an offense which is punishable by one or more years imprisonment (Felony)

Any repeated convictions of an offense which indicate a disrespect for the law, a lack of good moral character or disposition towards violence and disorder

Discharge from employment, where such discharge indicates poor behavior and/or inability adjusting to discipline

A Dishonorable Discharge from the Armed Forces

Persons convicted of a Petit Larceny

Persons convicted of Any Domestic Violence offense

You do need 60 college credits (minimum 2.0 GPA) or two years honorable military experience to get in as well.  Which isn't that difficult.

If you want better pay, go to the suburbs or become a State Trooper.
