NYSRWB issues a ruling for the safety of Belmont Stakes contenders
Ahead of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on 9 June, 2012, NYSRWB, the New York State Racing and Wagering Board has issue a ruling which is comprised of a set of protocols for those horse, who will be participating in the 1 ½ mile event at the Big Sandy.
According to the body, these protocols have been issued to ensure safety of horses and jockeys alike, and to make the Belmont Stakes a fair race with no margin for mishaps in these rulings are followed precisely, but the most notable one is the use of the “stakes” barn.
“Millions of race fans from around the world will be witnessing a historic spectacle at New York’s beautiful Belmont Park on June 9, and the Racing and Wagering Board will ensure that the race is run in a safe and fair manner,” Racing and Wagering Board chairman John D. Sabini said. “The protocols put forth here will protect horses, riders, and the betting public, and underscore the symbolism of the world-class racing held in New York State.”
The Chadds Ford Stable owned 3-year-old colt, Union Rags, who is currently based at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland preparing for the Belmont Stakes, will be affected the most by this ruling.
Trainer Michael Matz before the ruling had planned to ship Union Rags to Belmont Park on 7 June, or in the early hours of 8 June, but after the ruling these plans will get affected.
Matz, who saddled Union Rags to a seventh place finish to I’ll Have Another in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, and opted to bypass the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico to stay in good order for the Belmont Stakes, said that these sort of rulings should have been surfaced right after the Preakness Stakes, that was on 19 May.
With Union Rags scheduled to work on 6 June, 2012, at Fair Hill, Matz will have the son of Dixie Union sent out to work at 5:30 am and then at 7:00 am, and then he will van him to Belmont Park after the colt cools down.
