NYU Men’s and Women’s Fencing Teams at the MIT Invitational Event – Fencing Update
The New York University (NYU) Men’s and Women’s fencing teams fought hard but lost in the MIT Invitational held on Sunday in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The Men’s sabre squad ended with a victory over MIT and the Brandeis University, finishing with a 2-5 record. They were beaten while competing against the Number four Penn State University, Number seven University of Pennsylvania, Number nine Duke University,
Brown University and Boston College.
Despite of getting beaten bad, NYU also had some good spots at the Invitational. The foil Men’s squad got a record of 8-1, while epee Men’s squad with a 6-3 record.
The Head Coach Steve Mormando, overlooking the defeats, commented that he had found improvements in the performance of the team.
He said, “They’re developing as a team but they’re also individually positioning themselves for the Regionals in March and the Squad Championships in February.”
As compared to the Men, the Women had out-stood themselves on giving a relatively better performance this weekend. It was a close match of 14-13 between the Violets and Tufts, where the NYU Violets were victorious.
On Sunday, the Invitational saw NYU with a 3-4 record. The three wins were against Brown University, Boston College and the host MIT. On the other hand, the defeats were against the Duke, Pennsylvania, Brandeis and Penn State.
Senior Captain in Women’s epee said, “We faced tough competitors including Penn State and Duke University but the team stayed excited and motivated each other throughout the long day. Overall this season, I think the team has really come together as a unit
and I don't expect to see any less at the competition on Wednesday."
Both the NYU Men’s and Women’s teams returned home in order to carry on the competition, which is to take place on February 9, 2011. It will be a faceoff with the teams of Columbia University, Sacred Heart University and Vassar College at Coles Sport Centre.
It will be exciting to see how well NYU does against some tough fencing competition. The team are looking to put in a good performance during the competition.
