NZC maintains distance from Ryder following gambling tweets – Cricket News Update
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have chosen to maintain a distance from troubled batsman Jesse Ryder’s recent tweets regarding his gambling exploits, pointing out that the all-rounder is not currently contracted to the board.
“Big bets on the league 2day looking to have 2000 in the account at the end of the nite,” Ryder (@DijaRyder) tweeted on Sunday.
“Thanks Waikato 13+ good start,” he tweeted later, in celebration of Waikato's 42-22 victory over North Harbour.
However, NZC remained unperturbed, maintaining that Ryder is currently not on the board’s roster of contracted players.
“It's important to point out that he is not contracted to New Zealand Cricket,” said David White, NZC chief executive.
“In saying that, we know he's been working very hard in preparation for the new season with the Wellington Firebirds,” he added.
Ryder’s issues with alcohol have resulted in NZC frequently being forced to take disciplinary action against him, with the latest incident having been earlier this year during New Zealand’s ODI series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, during which Ryder, along with
teammate http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Doug-Bracewell-c1394, was dropped from the squad for a match following an evening of drinking, involving a drunken tussle with a bar patron.
Following the incident, the 28-year-old announced in March this year that he planned to take an “indefinite break” from cricket, in order to deal with what had been a “deeply stressful and emotional time”.
He declined an NZC contract for 2012-13 owing to personal issues, and instead busied himself with other activities, including boxing, in addition to participating in this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League, during which he was accompanied by his
manager and psychologist.
The all-rounder has maintained that he aims to make a comeback to cricket, and had been in contact with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mike-J-Hesson-c76286, with NZC having expressed appreciation for the progress Ryder has been making. In addition, the left-hander is also
all set to play for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864 Firebirds in the upcoming domestic season.
However, the tweets regarding his gambling activities could put a damper on things, in light of the resignation of New Zealand rugby player Willie Ripia from his team Western Force, after his gambling addiction (which forced him to steal from teammates)
was exposed.
