NZRU signs Joe Rokocoko
The New Zealand Rugby Union has announced that they have re-signed winger Joe Rokocoko. The new deal makes the star winger available for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, which is to be held in New Zealand.
Rokocoko is coming off another impressive Tri Nations tournament, in which the veteran winger helped his team on to a perfect record and a tournament championship, notching a try for his side in a match against
Australia.
The veteran is the most capped All Blacks winger of all time with 66 and will be a great asset to the side as they head off on their tour of the Northern Hemisphere at the end of the year.
The signing also makes Rokocoko available to his Auckland side in the Super 15 season. Nevertheless, it is likely that the star’s minutes and caps will be carefully managed in Super competition, as he will
want to say healthy for the World Cup.
Rokocoko said of the signing, “I am really enjoying my rugby here at home and am keen to continue playing throughout the rest of the year and into 2011. It’s obviously going to be a massive year for New Zealand
rugby next year and I want to be part of it.”
Chief executive director of the NZRU, Steve Tew, is excited by Rokocoko’s decision saying. “Joe is the ultimate professional, a favourtie with the fans and in his eighth year of professional rugby continues
to be an outstanding rugby player.”
Rokocoko began playing with New Zealand in 2003 when he was only 19 years old. The winger has accumulated 230 points for the All Blacks, while also managing 185 points for Auckland in Super Rugby.
In 2010 Rokocoko has already earned six caps for the All Blacks and will be participating in their game against Australia in Hong Kong in October.
