Na Yeon Choi grabs the fourth position in the first round of LPGA Championship 2012
Na Yeon Choi of South Korea displayed a superb performance in the first round of the Wegmans LPGA Championship, as she grabbed the fourth spot after posting a 70 on the leaderboard.
Choi was phenomenal on almost all the holes that she played, as she has managed to consolidate her position.
The major tournament is being played at the prestigious Locust Hill Country Club, New York, with a strong field featuring players like the current world number one Yani Tseng, Stacy Lewis, Lexi Thompson, Paula Creamer and Karrie Webb of Australia.
Despite the fearsome field, the South Korean star did not appear to be in trouble, as she capitalized on the favourable weather conditions and the supportive crowd.
Choi faced a little resistance from her nearest rival, but she was determined to stick to her work ethic. Three players currently lead the tournament, as they posted a 69 each.
The leaders are: Ryann O’Toole of the United States, Spanish Beatriz Recari and Giulia Sergas of Italy.
Analysts said that the match turned into an interesting battle when most of the top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars could not make it to the top-10.
Yani Tseng, who was expected to defend the title at the Locust Hill Country Club, got off to a woeful start, as she posted a 76 to stand tied for the 80th place on the leaderboard.
Choi spoke to the media at the end of the opening round, saying she is happy to surge past big names, and she will try to keep the momentum going in the second round.
The South Korean prodigy pointed out that ever since she started working on her putting, she has seen good results. She said that she is training hard on the practice range to improve other aspects of her game as well.
“I think I'm doing great so far. Actually in the last couple of years I played well after June or July. I used to be. But this year I finished 2 time runner up already. My putting statistic improved last year, so I think I feel great and I got a lot of
confidence,” the rising star said.
Choi added, “I just do my best every time, and I am working hard and I like to do, practice hard or practice long. I have to remind myself what is under my control”.
