Na Yeon Choi moves up to second position in world rankings
South Korean Na Yeon Choi, who won the season-ending CME Group Titleholders 2012 last week in Florida, has moved up to the second spot in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
The headline-grabbing move in world rankings came after Choi grabbed a title at the CME Group Titleholders 2012, which is sure to help the South Korean star play more aggressively in the next season.
Choi, who has now become one of the few rising stars in South Korea, has been performing well for the last few months, as she has fully capitalised on her vast experience.
Quite expectedly, the 2012 LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour has seen a clean-out of many seemingly unbeatable faces in women’s golf, which has opened the door for plenty of young guns who seem more capable than their senior counterparts.
Choi is certainly one of the young guns who have made their mark in professional golf. And the latest increase in her world ranking has reflected that she is now ready to take on rivals with a completely different approach.
Before moving up to the second spot, American Stacy Lewis was standing at the same position. Lewis has now slipped one place to the third position—something that must have come as a shock to American golf fans who had already got their hopes up about a possible breakthrough from national players in Asian-dominated women’s golf.
Despite how hard American contenders have been working in order to regain their lost glory in women’s golf, Choi’s performance deserves some study.
Having come into prominence on the back of her US Open win—a major one—Choi has put together a pretty decent pro career. She has grabbed a total of seven LPGA titles since turning professional in 2004.
Speaking during her latest interview to the LPGA Tour at the CME Group Titleholders, Choi said that ever since she grabbed her first major title in American in July this year, fans have pinned high hopes on her, and she is making sure she lives up to their expectations.
“It feel make me great, and yeah, like I think I got lot of (indiscernible) from the U.S. Open and I had a lot of experience from there, so I would never forget that day, yeah,” Choi said.
