Na Yeon Choi remains firm in second round of Mizuno Classic
South Korean Na Yeon Choi stood firm in the second round of Mizuno Classic 2012 as she carded a 71 to cling to a share of third position on Saturday.
The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament, which is being played at Kintetsu Kashikojima Country Club, Shima-s**+, Mie, Japan, pitted big names against each other, but when
the dust settled, lesser-known players stood strong.
Choi was one of the star performers to keep on the safe side, although her score worsened in the second round compared with a solid 69 on Friday.
The South Korean golfer is aware of how tough the match can get in the final round, because Japanese players are proving to be a big threat for Asian and American stars.
At the end of the second round, five Japanese players are standing inside the top 10.
But Choi has done enough to prove that she remains in contention and will not find it that hard to boost her position.
Although her performance on Saturday was not something to pin hopes on, Choi steered clear of a major slip-up and managed to shoot three birdies. Unlike the first round, in which she sank
two back-to-back birdies on the first two holes, Choi played in far more comfortable weather conditions on Saturday.
Winds remained a big concern for many players on the opening day, but the young star did not let nerve rattle her and displayed a good performance on tricky greens.
Admitting while speaking during her first-round interview on Friday, Choi said that it was very cold out there, which proved challenging for her.
“I think today I played really well on the front nine. I played well on the back nine, too, but there is a lot of wind out there and very cold,” she said.
“I had one bogey on the 17th hole but I think I’m in good position right now after the first-round and only two days left. I just have to get some good rest and I’m really looking
forward to the next few days”.
The LPGA titan went on to say that her putting was much better this time, and she will try to keep it up in the final round.
