Nadal and Del Potro will be trump cards at the Davis Cup Finals – Tennis News
All eyes are fixed on the final showdown of the current year, when Team Spain will take on Team Argentina in the Davis Cup Finals this weekend in Seville, Spain. World number two, Rafael Nadal, will lead the Spaniards against a
well prepared Argentine side led by the former US Open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the mega event starting from Friday.
The two big players will be extremely significant in the outcome of the competition and it is anticipated that it will be Nadal and Del Potro will act as the trump cards from the two sides. With the competition to be played on
the clay courts of Seville, Team Spain is regarded as the hot favourite for winning the big tie this weekend.
The second ranked Nadal has an outstanding record in Davis Cup competitions, having a 18-1 winning ratio in singles rubbers he played at this ITF (International Tennis Federation) event. Nadal played great part in Spain’s victory
in the 2004 and 2009 victory of the Davis Cup Finals and a similar kind of performance is expected from the Spaniard by his home crowd.
“It’s always a pleasure to play in front of my crowd, in front of the Spanish people; it’s always a special feeling when that happens,” said Nadal, “We are very excited and have a big illusion to try to play our best and to try
to win the fifth title. We want to enjoy a fantastic atmosphere here and feel the love of the crowd.”
Nadal will be accompanied by the fifth ranked David Ferrer, another lethal clay-court player in the side; along with 20th ranked Feliciano Lopez and the world number 24, Fernando Verdasco. Nadal was not in the Spanish
squad which outplayed Argentina in 2008 Davis Cup Finals at Mar del Plata, Argentina, but his presence in the side this time round makes Team Spain a formidable one. Verdasco was hailed as the hero of that emphatic win over the Argentines but Del Potro has
cited that loss is now far away from the minds of his team this year. Juan Monaco, Juan Ignacio Chela and the former world number three, David Nalbandian, will join forces with Del Potro in the competition.
“The final will be different from Mar del Plata,” said del Potro, “If we are very, very focussed for the first matches on Friday, maybe we will have the chance to win.”
Spain will eye to clinch its third Davis Cup title in four years and are hot favourites for winning on their home soil.
