Nadal and Federer raise $ 2.6 Million on first day of Charity Exhibition Matches
Last week it was reported that two bitter rivals of tennis were going to be playing a set of charity games for each other’s personal charities. The first game between the two took
place on Tuesday night and raised a net amount of $ 2.6 million. The World Number One Rafael Nadal and his rival Roger Federer are all geared to play the second game of the two charity exhibition matches.
The first match was played in Zurich and raised funds for Federer’s personal charity, the Roger Federer Foundation. The match was given the name “Match for Africa”; a rather fitting
name considering the fact that Federer’s charity operates in South Africa, his mother’s home land.
The match saw Nadal suffer a 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3 defeat at the hands of his rival. This loss must have come with extra sting for the Spaniard, who just barely managed to grab the
Number One spot from Federer earlier this year. Since his claimed the Number One position, Federer has already beaten him twice. The first defeat came at the World Tour Finals and the second at the first exhibition match.
The latter may have been of the friendly variety, but surely Nadal must not have taken the loss very well. He was all smiles for the public, but the player must be beating himself
up over this loss later on in the locker room. This win must add immense pressure on Nadal as far as the next exhibition match and the upcoming season are concerned. It seems as though he still has a lot to prove.
The second exhibition match will be played in Madrid, the Spanish capital.
"It'll be very exciting for me and very emotional for me also,"
said the Spaniard about the upcoming match. "We never played together in Switzerland before but in Madrid it's going to be the third time. We're going to be 1-1, he beat me in 2009, and I beat
him in 2010, so it's going to be a decisive moment."
This next match will be called "Joining Forces for the Benefit of Children" and the funds raised will go to the 23 year old Nadal’s personal charity.
