Nadia Petrova: a recap of her tennis performances 2010
Born on June 8, 1982 in the city of Moscow, Nadia Petrova is a professional tennis player from Russia. The 28-year-old Russian has so far won a total of twenty seven WTA trophies in her career.
The right-handed Petrova reached her career high rankings of world number three by the WTA back in 2006. She has made her way into the semi final of the clay court French Open tournament as her career best performances back in 2003 as well as in 2005. In doubles, Petrova won the Sony Ericsson tournament back in 2004 along with her partner Meghann Shaughnessy. The Miami resident is currently ranked number nineteen in the world in singles and number eleven in her doubles ranking by the WTA.
As far as her performances in 2010 are concerned, Nadia started the season by participating at the Brisbane International tennis tournament which was held in Australia. However she was knocked down by the second seeded Justine in the first round of the competition with a final match score of 5–7, 5–7. She then played at the Medibank International Sydney tennis competition but lost her opening match to the 39-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm in a total of three sets. The final match score was 3–6, 7–5, 4–6.
The Russian then participated at the hard court Australian Open tennis tournament as a nineteen seeded player. Nadia after beating Edina Gallovits as well as Kaia Kanepi made her way into the third round of the competition. In the third round, the right handed Russian upset the fifteen seeded Kim Clijsters in a time period of fifty two minutes. The final match score was 6–0, 6–1.Petrova carried her winning form in the fourth round of the competition where she got the better of third seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in a three setter clash. The final match score was 6–3, 3–6, 6–1. As a result of this victory, Petrova made her way into the quarterfinal round of the Australian Open competition on the second occasion in her career. She at last fell to the top ranked Justine Henin in a two setter clash with the final match score of 6-7, 5-7.
After a first round loss at the hands of Stefanie Vogele in Dubai, Nadia next participated at the Premier Mandatory competitions held in Indian Wells as well as Miami. At the 2010 BNP Paribas Open tennis competition in Indian Wells, Nadia Petrova was seeded number sixteen to win the title. She was given a first round bye and thus faced Patty Schnyder in her next round match and successfully managed to knock her down in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. However, she lost eventually lost in her fourth round battle at the hands of second seeded Caroline Wozniacki in a three setter clash. The final match score was 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
As far as her major performances are concerned, Petrova competed at the 2010 clay court French Open tournament as seeded nineteen to win the crown. She thrashed out Zhang Shuai in her first round clash with a final match score of 6-0, 6-3. In her second round match, the Russian got the better of Agnes Szavay in a total of two sets. Nadia continued her winning form in the next round where she toppled the second ranked American, Venus Williams in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 6-3. Petrova however, couldn’t win her semi final battle against Elena Dementieva and thus lost the battle with a final match score of 2-6, 6-2, and 6-0.
Despite losing, Nadia's quarter final run improved her rankings to as high as number thirteen in the world.
As far as the upcoming US Open 2010 is concerned, the Russian tennis player Nadia Petrova is hoping to come out strongly as compared to her last year’s performance at the Flushing meadows in New York.
