Petrova and Vinci are enjoying a breakthrough season and have made it through to such a prestigious event after gigantic struggle. Both players are amongst the list of veterans; Petrova is 30 years old whilst the Italian superstar
turned 29 in February. So, it has been a major achievement for both the athletes who have come so far ahead despite such a gruelling competition at elite level.
The Russian superstar was ecstatic to have made it through to such an elite tournament. She confessed in a press conference, “It's a good achievement to make the Tournament Of Champions - it means it's another year I won a tournament,
which qualified me to play in this event. I think Sofia will be a good way to finish off the year.”
Former world number three further added, “I guess the hard work pays off. It's been a long season with lots of things going on, but it's really nice to be playing good tennis at the end of the season and be at the stage I am right
now in my career.”
Vinci was also very delighted to book a berth in the Tournament Of Champions. While talking to the media representatives, she said, “Last year I went to Bali and it was unbelievable, so I am happy to qualify for Sofia this year.”
Petrova has played two finals this season and won both that includes UNICEF Open at s-Hertogenbosch and Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. On the other hand, Vinci reached the final of just one event this season; her conquest of
Texas Tennis Open in Dallas was a major breakthrough that opened up the Top-20 spot for her. Moreover, Petrova has three semi-final and five quarter-final appearances to go with her two titles. Vinci has also appeared in three semi-finals and eight quarter-finals.
So, the good work has yielded fruitful returns for both veterans. It will be interesting to see how these two athletes respond to the onslaught of the youngsters during their run in Sofia. The tournament begins on October 30th.
