Nadia Petrova crushes Mariana Duque-Marino to reach round two – Family Circle Cup 2012
Seeded 13th in this green clay court event, Nadia Petrova devastated the Colombian qualifier, Mariana Duque-Marino, with a breadstick at the Family Circle Cup 2012 on Tuesday. She summed up a 6-1, 6-2 victory against the 22-year-old to book a
spot in the second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event held in Charleston, South Carolina.
The Russian showed her top class performance to oust Duque-Marino in straight sets in 70 minutes. Encountering each other for the first time, Petrova convincingly advanced into the proceeding round and edged in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the
qualifier.
Petrova high-spiritedly entered the Family Center at Crandon Park and kept her serve in the opening game with poise. After Duque-Marino kept her serve in the second game, the Russian unleashed her true colours and stroke out the following five games in a
row to pull out the opener with a breadstick. She produced a spectacular first serve share of 95 per cent as compared to the Colombian’s 71 per cent and clicked 16 out of 20 points on it.
The Miami resident kept her momentum in the following set and after getting the desiderated break in the third game, she leaped to a 3-1 lead. Petrova carried on hitting exquisite forehands and capitalised on another break chance in the seventh game, ultimately
sealing thee success with a 6-2 score line. She clobbered a slightly lower first serve share this time but amazingly availed 10 out of 13 points on it.
Summing up the seed’s performance in this epic battle, Petrova spilled fewer errors brushed off both breakpoints she came across. The Russian converted four out of seven break chances to her advantage and ended the deal with 64 points.
Next in line for Petrova is the local qualifier, Jill Craybas, who edged past Uzbekistan’s Akgul Amanmuradova in two sets’ tie-breaker to set-up this clash. She sought eleven break chances and capitalised on two of them in each set. However, the American
lost her serve twice in each set and dragged both sets to the tie-breakers. Craybas unleashed her class in it and ultimately manipulating a 7-6(2), 7-6(6) success.
