Nadia Petrova dumps Julia Goerges to reach the fourth round – BNP Paribas Open 2013
World number 12, Nadia Petrova, showed no holds barred against the 25th ranked German, Julia Goerges, in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. She squashed the 24-year-old German in straight sets 6-1,
6-2 and booked a berth in the fourth round of the event. She looks on top of her game and moving across the court with such agility at the age of 30 is something unique and classy.
The experience of the former world number three was crucial to the victory against the pace-driven Georges. She opened up the proceedings with a delicate drop shot and won the breakthrough in the first game of the match. It was
a critical turnaround that allowed her to govern the latter portion of the contest. She held her serve to make it 2-0 in her favour and marched on with another blistering forehand winner to register a resounding lead of 3-0.
Goerges was out of her socks on the night of Monday. She couldn’t handle the onslaught and kept on making unforced errors that gifted a lot of points to her rival and depleted her position in the match. The lead for the 30-year-old
Russian was extended to 4-0 with a serve hold. The 21st seed German was on the verge of facing a bagel but she survived to write-off the embarrassment with a serve hold in the fifth game.
Everything running in favour of the Russian superstar helped her to clasp a lucky point in the final game of the first set. It was the third breakpoint of the match for her. Petrova needed a good start to the second set to put
her opponent under the woods and she got one courtesy to the breakpoint in the second game that allowed her to pile up a 3-0 lead on the German.
The German fought back with a serve hold which was followed up by a breakpoint. Scores were brought back on serves but the Russian was cheeky enough to squeak out another breakthrough to retain the lead. She ended the match with
six breakpoints to her name.
Caroline Wozniacki will face Nadia Petrova in round four.
