Labouring to get back her vintage form, the former world number three, Nadia Petrova of Russia, won her opening round match against Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei, in the opening round of the US Open on Monday.

coming out as the winner in the end. Currently ranked at number 25 in the world, Petrova took just on e hour and thirty nine minutes of play to wrap up victory in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, to oust Chan from the last Grand Salam tournament of the running year.
The Russian registered her 22nd victory of the running WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season on Monday and earned a place in the second round of the US Open. She kept her clean record against Chan, defeating the Taiwanese
for the second time in singles encounter. Petrova first met Chan in the second round of Wimbledon Championships in 2010 and defeated the Taiwanese in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, to carry on her voyage in the Grand Slam event.
Seeded at number 24 in the tournament, Petrova was brilliant on cashing in timely opportunities in the contest and converted all the five break chances she had in the matchup en route to victory. Chan had 10 break points in the
contest and she converted just half of them to finish on the losing side in the end. The Russian secured 28 out of 39 first serve points in the match, while her opponent closely followed her with 24 out of 41 points.
The opening set witnessed a total of five break point conversions from both contestants and Petrova bagging the set with three serve breaks to her name. A ballistic comeback from Chan in the second set stunned the Russian opponent,
as the Taiwanese nailed two crucial break points to take the set at 6-1, levelling the matchup at 1-1.
Petrova kept her focus in the matchup and turned the tables on her opponent in the final set of the match, registering two serve breaks to conclude victory at 6-4 and getting through to the second round of the tournament. The Russian
will be facing the unseeded Slovenian, Polona Hercog, in the next clash for a berth in the third round.
