Nadia Petrova faces first round exit at the hands of Camila Giorgi – Memphis 2012
World number 32, Nadia Petrova, faced an embarrassing upset at the hands of the 20-years-old Italian starlet, Camila Giorgi, in the opening round clash of Regions Morgan Keegan Championship. The Italian contestant just took
78 minutes in crushing the top seed contender in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
It was a stunning performance from the youngster who surprised with her incredible shot making ability on the indoors hard courts of The Racquet Club, Memphis. Even the top seed Petrova praised her game style, she stated,
“She didn't give me any rhythm. She was playing very aggressive. Clearly she wanted to play two-stroke rallies, hard through the middle and put it away. So it was really difficult for me to get into the match. She produced very good tennis today and I thought
at some point maybe she would have trouble closing it out, but she stayed solid throughout the whole match.”
Petrova started the match with a successful serve game but was broken in the third game of the set. It was the longest game of the set. She saved three breakpoints couldn’t stop her opponent on the fourth occasion. The initial
outbreak worked in the favour of the Italian who crushed her opponent down with another breakthrough in the fifth game, taking the scores to 4-1 in her favour.
The Russian tennis ace fought back with a breakthrough in the eighth game but wasn’t able to perform the heroics for the second time that forced her with a trail of one set. Everyone gave a standing ovation for the youngster
who looked absolutely devastating especially with her forehand down the line winners.
Nothing was going in favour of the Russian who was broken twice in succession in the first three games of the second set. The lead of 4-0 was taken upfront that left no doubts in anyone’s mind that the Italian qualifier was
going to register a massive upset in few moments.
Petrova was able to break her opponent’s serve in the sixth game but just to see her serve broken in the following game. The match was taken over by the Italian contestant who was absolutely ecstatic at her monumental triumph.
In a post-match interview, Giorgi stated, “Everything went well tonight. My serve was consistent. I just feel I played well and stayed focused on the match. I hope to keep going like this." It is always a mesmerizing experience
to witness the youngsters believing in themselves and ousting the superior counterparts.
