Nadia Petrova ousts Ana Ivanovic in 2nd round – Western & Southern Open 2011
World number 29 Nadia Petrova ousted world number 23 Ana Ivanovic in straight sets of 6-3, 7-6(4) during the second round of the Western and Southern Open 2011. The two were competing or the eleventh time on hard courts of Lindner
Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
The last time they contested against each other was at the D’Italia event held in Rome, Italy. Ivanovic had won the match as Petrova had to withdraw due to an injury hence; Ivanovic led the head-to-head with a 6-4 score.
23-year-old Ivanovic was over confident and impatient, as she had previously won the last two matches that they played against each other, which resulted in her committing 4 double faults in the set, while, Petrova had controlled
her serve and accuracy restricting to only two foot faults.
Petrova with her not so powered packed performance in her serves was only able to gain 55% of her total service, but in comparison to her opponent who barely attained 38% of her service points, she had a better performance.
However, Petrova owned her return games and won 16 out of 26 points, making in an exceptional 62% of her total return points, whereas, Ivanovic had only won 45% of her returns in the set.
Although, Petrova was unable to save the two break points on her serve she was able to break her opponent’s serve thrice against Ivanovic who only broke her twice. Hence she gained a competitive edge and clogged the set by attaining
a 58% win in her total set points.
Petrova attained a comprehensive victory in the first set and desired for another, however, that wish was not granted by the Higher Power and instead, Ivanovic made a comeback and forced the set into a tie breaker.
Ivanovic had an average performance in her serve as she was only able to attain 51% of her total service points against Petrova who was able to return a number of shots attained a total of 49% on her returns of the total set.
Petrova was able to win more games on her serve this time and managed to score 24 out of 43 points, making it a 56% win in her total service points, while, this time Ivanovic was a bit slow in grabbing and returning to her best
of capability and won only 44% of her total return points.
The scores of the two were blow for a blow but Ivanovic forced the set into a tie breaker by throwing an ace but Petrova had to fight hard in order to snatch the breaker, she got 56% of first serves in and cracked ace to win the
match 6-3, 7-6(4).
In one hour and 41 minutes Nadia Petrova won the match and changed the head-to-head to a 5-6.
