Nadia Petrova outfoxes Roberta Vinci in the 1st round – Western & Southern Open 2011
Russian Nadia Petrova got rid of Italian Roberta Vinci in the main draw of the Western and Southern Open 2011. The two were competing for the second time this year on the hard courts of the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason,
Ohio. 29-year-old Petrova ousted 28 year-old Vinci in a seesaw win of 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 victory in 1 hour, 38 minutes and 53 seconds.
Petrova served with a consistent exceptional serve during her first and second serves, which enabled her to win 19 out of 29 points, making it creditable sixty six percent win in her total service points, in opposition to Vinci,
who won only 48% of her total service points.
Both the players had struck one double fault each and neither of them smashed an ace. However, Vinci was unable to hit back with a good return serve and was barely able to achieve 34% win of her total return points, while Petrova
had a far better performance and hence, she won a commendable 52% of her total return points.
Vinci had saved one break point out of the three on her serve; Petrova bagged an opportunity against Vinci as she was able to break her twice, which was one more time than Vinci.  By accomplishing 60% of her total set points, Petrova
won the set with a 6-3 victory.
As Petrova dominated the first set, the second set was not so easily surmounted; instead it was a complete reversal of fate and in the next 40 minutes Vinci was on speed and bagged the set by clogging 65% of her total set points,
which were almost twice as many as her adversary’s.
With a meticulous defence Vinci did not allow a single opportunity for her opponent to break her, as she was able to save all her break points instead she broke her opponent thrice, whereas, Petrova was unable to save 3 out of
the 4 break points on her serve.
This time Vinci not only had a sturdy defence but she had almost double the points in all the scores of the set and won the set by accomplishing 65% of her total service points.
Both the players had bagged a set each and both wanted to win the third and final set but Petrova was not to let her sweat and blood go to waste, hence she restricted the 28 year-old Italian to four games and won the set by accomplishing
an ostentatious 80% of her total service points, against Vinci, who bagged only 44% of her total set points.
By accomplishing a total set score of 31 out of 55 points, Nadia Petrova secured a berth in the second round of the event.
