Nadia Petrova trounces Lourdes Dominguez Lino to reach round two – KDB Korea Open 2012
Seeded fourth in this event, Nadia Petrova trashed the Spanish veteran, Lourdes Dominguez Lino, in straight sets at the KDB Korea Open Tennis Championship 2012 on Wednesday. She nudged up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the 31-yyear-old to secure a spot in the round of 16 at this outdoor hard court event held in Seoul.
The Russian seed unleashed her true form at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event and required one hour and 44 minutes to overpower Dominguez Lino. As a result, Petrova not only edged in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the Spaniard but also inched closer towards her second year-to-date title.
Petrova made a powerful entry at the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Championship. She got the desiderated break in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. After Dominguez Lino held her serve in the fifth game, the Russian pocketed the last three games and clicked the opener with a 6-2 win.
Ranked 18th in the World, Petrova carried her winning ways in the following set. After getting the critical break in the third game, she jumped to a 3-1 lead. The Russian swiped her remaining serves with poise and eventually clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
Summing up the Russian’s performance in this encounter, Petrova fired nine ferocious aces to prevail. She clobbered a lower first serve share of 45 per cent as opposed to her opponent’s 50 per cent but impressively clinched 26 out of 33 points on it.
Up next for Petrova is the defending champion, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez from Spain. She eased past the Greek qualifier, Eleni Daniilidou, in straight sets in one hour and 33 minutes.
The Spanish veteran lost her serve twice but broke the Greek’s entire serves to pull out the opener with a 6-2 win.
Martinez Sanchez improved her game in the follow-up set. She dusted away all four breakpoints she came across to keep her entire serves. The Spaniard capitalised on one out of two break chances and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
Overall, the Spaniard produced an equal first serve share of 63 per cent and acceptably clicked 36 out of 51 points on it.
