Nehrain wins her first Group 1 race at the Qatar Prix de I’Opera at Longchamp in her first season
It is Roger Varian’s Nahrain who has won the Qatar Prix de I’Opera at Longchamp on 2nd October. She is an exceptional filly by all means because she broke her maiden at the very first chance presented on 16th May at Windsor. It was
with Neil Callan that she won the maiden against Mahmood Al Zarooni’s Paoletta with Frankie Dettori onboard.
It was a lineup for thirteen with competition from all ends by the entries of Sir Michael Stoute, Mahmood Al Zarooni, Jeremy Noseda and Ed Dunlop being the primary threats.
Just the next month she won at the Haydock with five other contestants on field.
Mark Brisbourne’s Belle Royale was the runner up in this race under Franny Norton. The third one to finish the race was David Simcock’s Weapon of Choice.
Sandown in July was Nahrain’s next destiny as she won this one too, including the maiden this can be counted as her hat trick at that time which is very rare for any horse to achieve in the very first season of their racing but Nahrain made her mark by winning
three in a row by the third month of breaking her maiden.
At Sandown she contested against Roger Charlton’s Primevere with Steve Drowne and Sir Michael Stoute’s Cape Dollar was third in row to finish the race with Ryan Moore.
As if breaking the maiden the first time and keeping a record of straight wins was not enough for Nahrain, she ran at Qatar Prix De L’Oprea in Longchamp which is a Group 1 race for fillies and mares aged three-year and above and ended up winning it from
nine other contestants competing for the title.
She tracked the leaders, was moving on well but suffered through lack of room on the track on inner over two furlongs out until over one furlong out. Then she geared up to lead inside the final furlong, she soon displayed strength and carried on with it
until the race end.
The runner up for this race was A Fabre’s Announce with Maxime Guyon riding. The third position holder for the race was J S Bolger’s Banimpire with K J Manning onboard.
Nahrain broke her maiden in May then kept a straight record of her races in June and July and then in her very first season she also won a Group 1 race at Longchamp, an enviable career within a little more than four months.
