Nail infection help!?

there seems to be a growth of some sort underneath one of my mom's fingernails..(index finger) it is not underneath where the nail bed is at but at the tip of the finger just underneath her nail (she has long nails) and its starting to spread out beyond the tip of the nail.

its like a white hard skin with tiny brown spike looking things in it.

what is it and how can we treat this? im just grossed out and i just want her to get rid of it. she said she's been putting anti fungal cream on it. but it doesn't seem to work too well.

i think that might possibly be a wart. she can go to a doctors office or clinic and get it burned off.
