  1. Roofing nails....not screws...Roofing nails have a flat sealing disk on them under the head....much better for making the roof water tight....

  2. Just finished putting on a new metal roof yesterday. I used screws with rubber washers. Reason for the screws are as follows...1 = holds metal longer and stronger,2= goes on faster (cordless drill vs hammering) 3 = no dents in metal caused from hammer. I hope this helps you.

  3. metal roof needs the screws with the rubber washers....the washers stop water from getting in....a nail is not going to do that

  4. You can get screws that have a rubber washer made on the for s******g down metal roofs. I would use screws.

  5. Get new roofing screws ( screws with the gaskets on the bottom)  that are 1/8 inch longer then the old ones. You also can get the same type of fasteners in nails you just can't nail them down hard. If you smash the gasket it will not work.

  6. Used to live on a farm with very old barns and have also worked as a handyman repairing barns and sheds for many years.  Can't tell you how many metal roofs I've been on to reattach loose sheets because the nails have pulled out over the years.  The screws w/rubber washers made today are much better than they were ten/fifteen years ago.  They will last much longer if installed correctly, as Zen said, don't squash the washers.

  7. The best bet is to find out the manufacturer of the roofing and ask them. Metal roofing is usually installed with screws, but the size and length may be restricted by the manufacturer.

Anytime you install any building material contrary to the Manufacturer's Installation Instructions, or the product's listing or labeling, you will void any type of warranty on the product; you will also be in violation of the Building Code, which requires that any roofing be installed per the Manufacturer's Instructions.
