Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas wins the sixth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine 2012
Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas of Team Movistar bagged an important win during the sixth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine 2012.
The Colombian rode brilliantly during the 166.5 kilometre chase to Morzine and restricted the race favourites.
He crosses the finish line in a quickest time of 4 hours, 46 minutes and 12 seconds and occupied the top podium spot.
While commenting on the stage win, Nairo briefed, “It was a really complicated stage because I went through really bad sensations at the start and couldn't make the breakaway”.
“With 4k from the summit, I saw a good moment to give it a try”.
“I didn't attack really strong, but instead on a progressive pace. I knew I could get to the finish solo if I had twenty seconds at the top”.
Reigning Tour de France champion, Cadel Evans was also impressive during the event but the Australian could not match the likes of Rojas.
He finished 16 seconds behind at the second spot with Daniel Moreno Fernandez of Team Katusha claiming the third position, with a total deficit of 24 seconds.
The stage 5 general classifications leader of the race, Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky finished fourth and maintained his top overall spot.
Pieter Weening of Team Orica GreenEdge, Christopher Froome of Team Sky Procycling and Vasil Kiryienka of Team Movistar achieved the fifth, the sixth and the seventh positions respectively.
Wiggins thanked his team-mates for their support all through the French race and briefed it as, “an ideal situation for us all day”.
He further added, “We’re trying to do a job and we’re doing it as efficiently and professionally as possible. It’s never about sending messages”.
Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas of Team Movistar acclaimed the top podium spot with 15 UCI points to his credit.
Cadel Evans of Team BMC, Daniel Moreno, Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky and Pieter Weening of Team Orica GreenEdge claimed the next four spots with 12, 10, 8 and 6 points respectively.
Cayetano José Sarmiento Tunarrosa of Team Liquigas-Cannondale succeeded during the first four mountains of the race while Brice Feillu of Team Saur-Sojasun and Nairo Alexander of Team Movistar succeeded during the fifth and the sixth climb of the race.
