    Approximately 80% of Earth's atmosphere is nitrogen. However, only a small portion of this molecular nitrogen  is converted into a form that can be used by plants and animals.  This converted nitrogen is termed fixed nitrogen.  In the past this fixed notrogen was in a balanced amount of what was needed.  Unfortunately, industrial and other human-derived sources of fixed nitrogen have now doubled the rate that is now available.  This increase in fixed nitrogen has greatly contributed to the negative effects listed above.
