  1. One would use a thermometer for checking the temperature.  But, one would use a hygrometer for checking humidity.

The first is usually calibrated in degrees celsius or farenheit.  The second is a percentage of how much moisture is actually in the air around the instrument relative to mow much that air could hold if it were saturated, or holding as much water as it can.

Contrary to one answer given, the barometer is used for checking barometric pressure, which is the relative weight of the air around you at a given time.  This is usually given in inches of mercury (hg).

  2. a thermo - meter and a baro - meter

  3. umm... a thermometer and a barometer I think.

  4. a thermometer is often a sealed glass tube with a resevoir of mercury or some other liquid that will readily expand with an increase in temperature

a barometer is often a curved tube with one sealed end filled with mercury in the bend (pressures are often measured in inHg)
