  1. World War I veterans, World War II veterans, Korean War veterans, Vietnam vets, Afghanistan vets, Gulf war vets, Iraq vets.

  2. Well, you can work in a specialized practice, focusing on a particular species--a Certified feline specialist, equine specialist, avian, swine, bovine, zoo or exotics specialist...(you get my drift)

Then there's the other kind of specialized practice, focusing on a particular area of care: dermatology, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, oncology, behaviour, anesthesiology, internal medicine and dentistry.

You can go in to large animal practice, where you provide medical/surgical services to livestock. Emphasis is often placed on herd health including environmental, nutritional, and reproductive medicine. An example: Equine practitioners may focus on racehorses, breeding farm management, pleasure horse practice, or a combination of the three.

Then there's small (domestic) animal practice--what you usually think of when you hear the word 'vet.' You can either limit your practice to one type of animal OR treat a bunch of different kinds. Most veterinary facilities are miniature hospitals complete with laboratory, X-ray, surgery suite, pharmacy, examination and treatment rooms, isolation ward, dentistry station, and kennels for patient boarding and/or hospitalization.

    Now--becoming a vet.

It requires 4 years of college and an additional 4 years of veterinary medicine. There are only 27 schools of Veterinary medicine in the U.S., so admission is VERY competitive. Internship or residency credits are not required but are offered to achieve advanced qualification or specialty certification.  You must pass a veterinary medical board exam; after that in order to practice in a state you need to pass a state board exam. Each state has their own requirements.

There are some colleges that have pre-vet or veterinary science majors. U of Arizona has the latter, though that is not a particularly prestigious school. In terms of pre-vet majors a decent school with this program is UMass Amherst.

Since there aren't many schools with this option, it may be best to go to the best school you can get in to and major in Biology, which is what many students planning to go to vet school will do.
