  1. You need to notify Social Security as soon as you can. There could be an issue for proper credit of with holdings that are deposited.

Patriot Act requires that you report the changes.  This is to minimize fraudulent use of social security numbers, etc.

There could be a problem with your credit report, if this matter is not addressed.

If you use your name, as changed, then it will not match last year's return.   This is a red flag, one that is especially obvious when electronic filing.  In fact, the electronic return could be rejected.

I am in the lending business.  If a name on application does not match that o social security card, drivers license, and tax return, there will be a question of identity. Underwriter will require this be resolved. (The same thing will happen with settlement of estate.)

The bottom line is that if some one changes their name, but does not make the changes noted above, then IRS can question identity, and question if there was intent to commit fraud.  You do not want to open that can of worms.

  2. IRS will key off your last name so unless you have become Ed John Smythe, the computer will digest whatever you feed it. You could file as Edward J Smith, E J Smith Ed Smith or Ed J Smith and it would be OK.

  3. IRS will match your name with the name on record with the IRS and with the Social Security, if they don't match then you will delay your tax return from being processed.  IRS will reject your return and send you a letter to verify your name and to send in documentation (court) showing your name change.

  4. Use whatever name is on your social security card. You should file with the ss office. It isnt difficult.
