Do laws regarding changing your name vary from state to state?

I am taking my fiance's last name, but I am also going to change my middle name to my maiden name because that's a tradition in my family (mom's side). Do I have to do anything extra to do that, or can I change my middle name along with my last name?

  1. yup and you have to go to court and its pretty spendy you could also have trouble because of your birth certificate

  2. Did you get your marriage license yet?  I live in PA and I just got mine on Monday, once they get my marriage license back from the priest, they are going to send me everything I need to go about changing my names and such.  It's a whole envelope with checklists and such

  3. You should be able to do both at the same time without to much fuss

  4. No. You do not have to do anything extra. You can change both names at the same time and it will cost about $100.

  5. Yep

  6. Changing your last name is no problem.  Changing your middle name requires going to court.

Here's a place to start.  Call your local Probate court to get the particulars for where you live.

  7. Here, I just went to he social security office and gave them my marriage certificate, birth certificate, and other SSN card. You can change your name to whatever you want.

*** I had my middle name taken out and my maiden put in.

  8. i think the only thing u have to change is ur driver's license and social security card. at most ur ssc maybe $10 and DL $30. i don't think u have to change ur birth certificate. since u were born susie mae jonhson! u wouldn't change ur birth certificate to susie mae black.so susie jonhson black shouldn't be a problem. congrats and good luck!

  9. You'll have to go to court to do that. I'm pretty sure, like when you want to get you're first name changed. Same thing.

  10. ...............

  11. court DUHHH

  12. In our state you can.  You go to probate court to file.  They make you publish it in the paper for two weeks and then they have a hearing you attend and they finalize the name change.  You can change it to whatever you want.

  13. in wisconsin you just have to go to the social security office and fill out the paperwork to get a new card with your new name on it.  i think it cost me $10.  but it varies by state, so call your SS office and see what they say.  there's generally no court involvement.  and you take care of everything at once...when you fill out the lines for your name, just replace your middle with your maiden and add the new  last!  it's easy, and it only takes a couple weeks to get a new card./  that's when you can go and get your new license and everything too!  good luck, and congrats!
