Name confusion allows Thompson to surge 52 positions despite one week’s absence
There are stories about golfers who surge their positions in world rankings on the basis of their struggle, determination and perseverance.
The second category comprises of players that are able to accommodate themselves at top positions despite the fact that they have not been playing any golf event for a week.
This is precisely the category where players like Michael Thompson fit themselves in.
Regardless of the fact that Thompson has not been engaged in any golf tournament since a week, he was still able to ascend 52 positions.
After reading this the only question that instantly pops in anyone’s mind is how on earth was that possible?
Without considering the reliability or before challenging the authenticity of the news it is important to mention that it is perfectly true.
However, the main reason for this occurrence has been because of the confusion that occurred over the middle initial of his name that led to the sudden restructuring of world rankings, allowing Thompson to settle himself on 131 straight from 183.
It is important to mention here that Thompson after getting over with his PGA Tour was able to finish at the 98th spot.
After arriving from the tour, he checked his ranking and was dejected to find out that he did not gain any points.
It was, however, at the inaugural Thailand Golf Championship that took place at the end of the year where Thompson was finally able to get a breakthrough.
With the help of his superb game play, he was able to finish third just behind players like Lee Westwood and Charl Schwartzel. But even that was of no good to him, as in the end, he slumped two positions to reach 183.
Thompson started his PGA career in the year 2008 after he was able to establish his image as a reputed amateur golf player.
Since there was already another Michael Thompson present in the archive, he was provided with a name ‘X’, which is a commonly applied convention in the game.
After playing the U.S. Open and Traveler's Championship in 2008, he was able to clinch the 28th position and hence earned the card of H for Hayes.
The confusion remained as the name Michael X Thompson still remained in the database and archives, allowing the player to enjoy a fleetingly existing increase of 12.8, along with a concomitant rise in ranking.
